Dressed as lumberjack, Liberty student dives in cold waters to help Special Olympics

Long waited over a year to take on the chilly waters at the 2010 Polar Plunge at Lynchburg’s Camp Hydaway after he missed the deadline for the previous year. When the time finally came around, he braved the plunge with no regrets… in a full lumberjack costume. Talk about dedication.

“The Hill City Polar Plunge was a great event and I’d encourage everyone to participate or at least support those who do,” Long said of the plunge.

The Liberty University student had heard of the Hill City Polar Plunge before and was eager to participate in the festivities. His determination and persistence raised $252 for the Special Olympics of Va., which is more than four times the amount required for participation this year

The easiest way to earn funds? Adam explained how he set up a First Giving account on www.firstgiving.com and frequently posted the link on his Facebook page to spread the word and connect friends and family to the opportunity to give.

The best part about participating? Giving special needs athletes the chance to thrive and succeed in the world of athletics.

“…We, the plungers, would get strange looks for telling people we were plunging, but the athletes get the same looks when they tell people that they play basketball, baseball, etc.,” Long said. “I’m glad SOVA (Special Olympics of Virginia) provides an opportunity for people who have struggles to overcome those struggles and enjoy all life has to offer them.”
